199 Bay Street (Bay at King)
Toronto, Ontario
Structure: stainless steel and glass
Completed 1973
Architect: I.M. Pei
Style: International
I am enchanted by this tower's smooth, clean stainless steel and glass exterior, as well
as its graceful proportions. Its wide span is clearly articulated by uninterrupted
spandrels, and its height is expressed by tall, floor-to-ceiling windows. Upon its 1973
completion, this was the world's tallest stainless steel building. It was also the first
to use double-decker ("piggy-back") elevators.
